Internet Usage Analysis Service

December 11th, 2006 · No Comments

For some time we've been working with ContentKeeper to try and find a way to measure the compliance (or non-compliance, as is usually the case) of employees' use of the Internet with their employeer's Acceptable Use Policy. Up to now, the only real way has been to manually process through a sea of log files or (this is easier) to install a ContentKeeper appliance, run it in "silent" mode, and then analyse the generated logfiles.

Either way, it's been a difficult and time consuming process.

We've come up with a better way.

By using an organisation's proxy server log files, we can process these into a form that we run through a modified version of ContentKeeper. Modified, in that it allows us to feed URL's via a script (and obviously, it doesn't so any blocking). The ContentKeeper logfiles are then processed in CK's excellent Advanced Reporting Module, which in turn generates a clear report of what is happening within their workplace environment.

The end result is the same, in that a report of somewhere between 50 and 100 pages is generated that details all aspects of operation over a specified time period. But it's much easier. Most organisations have access to their proxy log files (or can get them if proxy management is outsourced), so all they have to do is burn them onto a CD or DVD. There's no equipment to install, no network changes to be made, and no employee needs to know it's happening.

We're offering a fixed-price analysis service for one, three or six months' of data. If you'd like all the details, go to:
